Cultural News: OMODA Takes the Wheel at London Fashion Week as Chinese Carmakers Accelerate UK Expansion

When the British Fashion Council (BFC) unveiled the final schedule for London Fashion Week this February, it did more than confirm the line-up for one of the capital’s most influential cultural events. It also announced that Chinese automotive marque OMODA will serve as Principal Partner for the February 2026 edition, which runs from Thursday 19 February to Monday 23 February.

The appointment signals a deliberate convergence of automotive branding and high fashion. Rather than relying solely on conventional car marketing channels, OMODA is positioning itself within a fashion-led cultural framework, aligning vehicle design with creativity, lifestyle and self-expression — qualities long associated with London Fashion Week.  In doing so, the company is seeking to recast the car not merely as a functional product, but as a design-driven lifestyle statement.

Such positioning is particularly resonant in the UK, where the fashion and creative industries exert considerable influence over consumer perception and brand equity. By embedding itself in a globally recognised cultural platform, OMODA gains exposure to affluent and trend-conscious audiences who may be less responsive to traditional automotive advertising. The strategy also addresses lingering assumptions in parts of the market that Chinese-built vehicles compete primarily on price rather than on design or innovation.

The timing is notable. Chinese car manufacturers have expanded rapidly in the UK over the past 12 to 18 months. Industry figures indicate that Chinese-branded vehicles accounted for close to 10 per cent of all new car registrations in 2025, almost double the previous year’s share. Growth has been driven by a combination of competitive pricing, increasingly sophisticated battery and hybrid technology, and a widening model range from brands including MG, BYD (Build Your Dreams), OMODA and Jaecoo.

Marketplaces such as Auto Trader and Carwow have reported sharp increases in search interest, enquiries and listings for Chinese electric vehicles, particularly from BYD, with year-on-year enquiry volumes rising by several hundred per cent. The appeal has been strongest among younger buyers attracted by value, technology and contemporary styling.

Laura Weir, Chief Executive of the British Fashion Council, described OMODA as a natural fit for the event. She said the brand’s commitment to design and innovation made it “a powerful partner for LFW”, adding that the collaboration would champion individuality and creativity while supporting a February schedule that reflects “the energy, diversity and ambition of London fashion”.

Under the principal partnership, OMODA will provide VIP shuttle services using its flagship OMODA 9 SHS and the new OMODA 7 SHS, which will make its public debut during the week. The company will also partner with ROKSANDA for a 20th anniversary celebration dinner, host an immersive digital hub within the BFC NEWGEN Show Space, and collaborate on a digital content series alongside additional initiatives directly supporting designers.

Victor Zhang, OMODA UK Country Director, framed the partnership as a statement of cultural intent. He said London Fashion Week celebrates creativity and design — principles at the core of the brand — and argued that the presence of the OMODA 7 SHS and 9 SHS throughout the week would demonstrate vehicles that combine style, luxury and hybrid flexibility.

For OMODA, the association is more than event sponsorship; it is an attempt to anchor the brand within contemporary British cultural life. As Chinese automotive groups consolidate their foothold in the UK market, such cross-sector alliances suggest a shift from competing solely on price and specification to competing on narrative, design credibility and cultural relevance.

London Fashion Week (LFW)* will return this autumn, running from 18 to 22 September, with an expanded schedule celebrating Britain’s bold creative voice and welcoming a new wave of talent. The British Fashion Council (BFC) has confirmed a line-up featuring both established names and rising designers, alongside a series of strategic changes aimed at strengthening the event’s cultural and commercial impact.

Burberry SS 2021

This season marks an 18 per cent increase in the number of designers showing on the official schedule, reflecting Chief Executive Laura Weir’s renewed focus on cultural relevance, global competitiveness, and meaningful support for emerging talent.

Among the changes, the BFC has waived show fees for designer members presenting physical shows on the main schedule and doubled investment in the LFW Guest Programme—supported by the Department for Business and Trade—to host a larger cohort of international press, buyers, and cultural commentators.

Emilia Wickstead

The provisional schedule includes fashion powerhouses such as Burberry, Erdem, Emilia Wickstead, Simone Rocha, and Roksanda—celebrating its 20th anniversary—alongside the influential talent incubator Fashion East, which marks its 25th year.

Roksanda AW24

JW Anderson will host a special evening event in collaboration with the BFC to celebrate the brand’s relaunch, while BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund winner Conner Ives will present a new collection. Cult label Chopova Lowena returns to the schedule, joined by Ahluwalia, Harris Reed, Labrum London, Marques’Almeida, Paolo Carzana, Patrick McDowell, Richard Quinn, Talia Byre, and Tove.

Simone Rocha AW24

The BFC NEWGEN programme will once again showcase emerging talent both physically and digitally, including Aaron Esh, Aletta, Charlie Constantinou, Ewusie, Johanna Parv, Karoline Vitto, Kazna Asker, Liza Keane, Louther, Lueder, Octi, Oscar Ouyang, Pauline Dujancourt, Steve O Smith, Tolu Coker, The Ouze, The Winter House, and Yaku. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has reaffirmed its support for the BFC NEWGEN showspace at 180 Strand for the next four years.

This season will also feature retail-led activations bridging culture and commerce, with stylist Harry Lambert launching a Disney x Zara collection at Selfridges and H&M returning to the schedule with “The London Issue” catwalk.

International collaboration will be in the spotlight as celebrated Indian designer Anamika Khanna makes her LFW debut. Other first-time catwalk appearances include Dreaming Eli, Kseniaschnaider, and Rory William Docherty, while Kyle Ho, Lucila Safdie, and adaptive fashion brand Unhidden will debut with standalone presentations.

LFW will conclude on Monday evening with a closing party hosted by the BFC in partnership with Outlander magazine, supported by 1664 Blanc, which returns as Principal Partner for the second year. Other official partners include eBay, Dylon, Pandora, Sprayground, The Londoner, Toni&Guy, HM Government, and the Mayor of London, with Malin+Goetz and Ocean Outdoor confirmed as official supporters.

Fashion Event News: British Fashion Council Cancels June 2025 London Fashion Week to Refocus on Menswear in Paris

At a time when the global garment industry is facing unprecedented challenges, the British Fashion Council (BFC) has officially cancelled the June 2025 edition of London Fashion Week (LFW), a move that reflects the month’s long-standing struggle to draw attention compared to the flagship fashion weeks held during the main international seasons.

Instead, the BFC is said to shift its focus to London Show Rooms Paris, a platform dedicated to showcasing UK-based brands. Running from 26 June to 1 July, the event will spotlight menswear as its central theme.

Launched in 2012 as London Collections: Men, the June event once thrived as a dedicated platform for menswear, later rebranding as London Fashion Week Men’s. However, as the industry shifted toward co-ed presentations and designers opted for February or September slots—or even other cities—the appeal of the June showcase began to wane. The pandemic also took a toll, with participation remaining solid through 2022 before seeing a marked decline in 2023.

A BFC spokesperson has commented that the BFC is taking a digital-first approach, working with buyers and media partners and use their own platforms to spotlight the evolving narrative of British menswear. By scaling back to more targeted programmes in London and Paris, the Council's aim is to lay strong foundations to amplify the message of British menswear businesses.

"We acknowledge the challenges the sector faces globally and remain committed to supporting our designers as they navigate the changing fashion landscape,” said the BFC spokesman.

Interestingly London Show Rooms Paris, which had been paused since mid-2023 before returning last September, will now take place four times a year. This gives designers affiliated with the BFC Foundation consistent opportunities to connect with international media and generate commercial momentum outside of traditional show formats.

By pivoting to the Paris-based showroom format, the BFC hopes to offer UK menswear designers a compelling international stage at a time when many peer labels are presenting collections globally. Paris, as a key hub for menswear, is expected to provide a more receptive and commercially viable environment.

Sustainability Collaboration: British Fashion Council Adopts Copenhagen Fashion Week's Sustainability Requirements

Copenhagen Fashion Week's Sustainability Requirements has been leading the fashion industry since its inception in 2020, and its introduction of a minimum set of standards that all CPHFW show & presentation schedule brands have had to conform to was adopted in January 2023.

Now the British Fashion Council and Copenhagen Fashion Week announce a new collaboration, joining forces to align their efforts to accelerate the industry's sustainability actions across the Nordic and British fashion markets.

As part of the collaboration, the BFC will roll out the Sustainability Requirements framework developed by CPHFW. This will kick off with the BFC NEWGEN initiative in 2025, where the Minimum Standards will be embedded into the existing mandatory criteria for admission. Following an onboarding and piloting period, the full implementation will come into effect fully by January 2026.

BFC NEWGEN is the world leading designer programme which supports the best emerging fashion design talent and represents key voices in the British fashion industry. Applications are now open for highly creative designer fashion businesses that has been actively trading for less than 3 years.

Caroline Rush, Chief Executive, British Fashion Council said: "We are thrilled to align with the Copenhagen Fashion Week Sustainability Requirements across BFC NEWGEN, this builds on our existing Minimum Standards and reaffirms our commitment to driving positive change across the global fashion industry. This partnership is a significant step in ensuring that sustainability becomes integral to the future of fashion. Together, we are creating a framework that empowers emerging designer fashion businesses to lead the way and contribute tangibly to a more sustainable and responsible industry."

Cecilie Thorsmark, CEO of Copenhagen Fashion Week said:  "We are delighted to join forces with the British Fashion Council to further expand the reach of our Sustainability Requirements. This partnership not only fosters much-needed industry alignment but also underscores the unique potential of fashion weeks and councils to drive positive change within the industry. With the British Fashion Council, as an influential player in the global fashion landscape, we see a lot of potential to further amplify the impact of our collective commitment to sustainability."

This partnership is a key part of the BFC's ongoing work through its Institute of Positive Fashion (IPF). The IPF was launched as a think tank to address the fashion industry's environmental impact and aims to guide the industry toward sustainable practices, promoting climate action while serving as a platform for research, collaboration and education to accelerate positive change. 2025 marks five years of the IPF and this collaboration with CPHFW underscores the BFC's continued commitment to drive a more sustainable future.

About the Sustainability Requirements

The Sustainability Requirements were introduced by Copenhagen Fashion Week in close collaboration with their Knowledge Partners In Futurum and Dansk Fashion & Textile in January 2020. Since then, they have been updated during 2024 to reflect industry developments as well as changes in the EU policy landscape. The framework represents an essential part of CPHFW's sustainability strategy to drive comprehensive change in the fashion industry and was reviewed by their Advisory Board and an international panel of experts.

Since its launch, the Norwegian Fashion Hub, Oslo Runway and Berlin Fashion Week executed by Fashion Council Germany have embarked on the implementation of the Sustainability Requirements framework.

Meanwhile Copenhagen Fashion Week recently announced it had won the PETA Fashion Awards 2024, having gone fur-free. CFW has also removed wild-animal skins and feathers from the runways, reflecting its commitment to more ethical practices.

Mumutane home designs answer consumer demand for eco-conscious lifestyle products

Climate change remains the world’s highest environmental priority with nearly half (46%) of consumers globally citing it among their top three concerns.

Today the growing number of lifestyle brands for home and everyday lives that have sustainability in the heart of their design focus and in the way they source materials, emerge to meet consumer demand.

Mumutane range of unique cushions made sustainability with fabrics sourced from Africa.

According to new research from the 2022 Mintel Consulting Sustainability Barometer, the number of global consumers citing climate change as a top three environmental concern has risen from an average of 39% to 46% between 2021-22*.

Air quality (eg exhaust fumes, industrial emissions) (36%) and plastic pollution (eg ocean plastic) (33%) complete the world’s top three environmental concerns; however, concerns about plastic pollution are down slightly from 36% in 2021.

Growing awareness is evident as just under three in five (58%) consumers globally agree that extreme weather events (eg flooding, heatwaves) in the country where they live encourage them to personally do more activities to protect the environment. And it seems helping the planet brings with it a feel-good factor as an overwhelming 68% of consumers globally say doing things that benefit the environment makes them feel happy. While 38% say they want to show other people how they are doing good for the environment (eg by sharing on social media). A further 24% say they have researched their annual carbon footprint (eg with an online calculator or app).

Danish brand Mumutane's sustainable textile products were well-received during Design London held in September 2022 at Magazine London in north Greenwich.

Maria Kastrup Lausten
In relaying her brand’s sustainable journey as well as the importance of incorporating a social impact aspect, founder Maria Kastrup Lausten said fair visitors including interior designers, architects, retail buyers and members of the press and media were eager to learn about interior design made from reused materials, and the different ways to build a circular business model.

The Mumutane range of home products feature traditional African prints presented with Nordic minimalism.  Maria uses leftover fabrics from Kvadrat (a Danish textile company that produces and supplies textiles and textile-related products), achieving unique cushion designs with a good balance of modern cross-cultural mix.

Maria said African wax print textiles contain many tales and stories of life in Africa, which give the products a special dimension and story.  Every cushion is unique, with the front made of wax print textile sourced from small, local textile shops in West Africa, and the back is made of high-quality wool-blended leftover textiles.

The environment and social responsibility agenda together with the “give work philosophy” is a mindset that is rooted in the core of the strategy of Mumutane, which became certified as a B Corporation in 2021, said Maria.

Founder Maria added the objective is to create “products with purpose”, which is why Mumutane has a sustainable approach with a focus on minimising textile waste, improving work conditions in low-income countries and supporting production with social conscious and impact.

Menswear designer Saul Nash at London Fashion Week on 12th June 2022

London designer Saul Nash, winner of the British Fashion Council Foundation’s Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design and 2022/23 BFC NEWGEN recipient, will be at London Fashion Week presented by Clearpay this June, showcasing his latest collection on the digital schedule, at 13.00 on Sunday 12th June.

Nash's eponymous brand can be watched on the digital schedule, accessible to all on the #LFW platform.

From North East London, Nash received a scholarship to attend and graduate from the eminent MA Menswear at the Royal College of Art in 2018, and arrived at his fashion practice via the unconventional route of performance. Known also as a choreographer, Nash practised for many years as a dancer and graduated from BA Performance Design at Central Saint Martins in 2015.

Saul Nash is described by online lifestyle retail-magazine Hypebeast as "the next superstar of sportswear", and fans admire his ability to bring luxury to activewear, creating fluid menswear that compromises neither function nor style.  Inspired by the kinetic body, and the subversion of sportswear via the memories of the different people he grew up in London, Nash’s practice extends to worn garments and their ability to liberate an individual’s identity. He favours relaxed silhouettes and mesh fabrics that enable movement and flow, while asymmetric hems and monochromatic colourways highlight the designer’s focus on expression. Staying loyal to the brand’s roots, all limited-edition styles are produced by local North East London manufacturers.

The Saul Nash collections are carried at retailers including Browns, SSENSE, HTOWN, FLANNELS and Selfridges.
