Fashion Recognition: Nicklas Skovgaard wins Wessel & Vett Fashion Prize 2025

Danish designer Nicklas Skovgaard has been named the winner of the Wessel & Vett Fashion Prize 2025, the Nordic region’s most prestigious award celebrating emerging fashion entrepreneurs.

Nicklas Skovgaard at the award ceremony receiving his prize from Nina Wedell-Wedellsborg,
Founder of the Wessel & Vett Fashion Prize.

Skovgaard receives a cash prize of 500,000 DKK (USD 77,000) and will gain significant exposure through a partnership between the Wessel & Vett Fashion Prize and Copenhagen Fashion Week (CFW). The collaboration will provide the designer with communication support and participation in official CFW activities, including the Autumn/Winter 2026 edition, scheduled for 27–30 January 2026.

Celebrating Innovation and Vision

This year’s competition saw Mfpen, Nicklas Skovgaard, and Stel selected as the three finalists, each presenting their collections and business strategies to an international jury of leading fashion professionals. The 2025 edition reinstated the prize’s signature dual-jury format, bringing together both creative and business-focused experts to ensure a comprehensive assessment of each brand’s artistic and commercial strengths.

The creative jury evaluated vision, aesthetics, craftsmanship, and cultural relevance, while the business jury focused on scalability, market potential, and sustainable strategy. The result was a holistic decision that balanced artistry and entrepreneurship.

A Designer Defining Danish Fashion

In his acceptance statement, Skovgaard reflected on his journey and creative philosophy:

“Being a finalist in 2022 was already a huge honour, and winning the Wessel & Vett Fashion Prize this year feels like a powerful recognition of how much I’ve grown since then,” he said. “My work has always been about reshaping the familiar and rethinking the nostalgic. This prize motivates me to push further, build a stronger team, and bring my work to a broader audience—while staying true to the emotional and artisanal values that define my brand.”

Jury Praise for a Distinct Creative Voice

Nina Wedell-Wedellsborg, founder of the Wessel & Vett Fashion Prize and board member of the Wessel & Vett Foundation, praised Skovgaard’s artistic vision:

“Our winner stood out for a unique and emotionally rich aesthetic that blends theatrical and historical influences with a modern sensibility,” she said. “Through precise construction and a strong sense of form, Skovgaard transforms clothing into storytelling—honest, artistic, and innovative. He represents a bold new voice in Danish design.”

Cecilie Thorsmark, CEO of Copenhagen Fashion Week, also highlighted the prize’s growing influence:

“The Wessel & Vett Fashion Prize continues to go from strength to strength, celebrating designers who define Danish fashion today. We’re proud to partner with the Wessel & Vett Foundation in supporting emerging talent through CPHFW NEWTALENT.”

A Partnership Supporting Emerging Designers

Since 2022, Copenhagen Fashion Week and the Wessel & Vett Foundation have collaborated through CPHFW NEWTALENT, a talent support scheme providing bursaries and visibility for up-and-coming designers. As Bursary Partner, the Foundation contributes financial support for the brands’ showcases during both the August and February fashion weeks—furthering their shared commitment to fostering creativity and sustainability in Nordic fashion.

About the Wessel & Vett Fashion Prize

Founded in 2012 by the Wessel & Vett Foundation, the Fashion Prize is widely regarded as Scandinavia’s leading independent award for fashion design. It champions innovation, entrepreneurship, and creativity, honouring Denmark’s design heritage while nurturing the next generation of fashion leaders.

The Foundation itself carries forward the visionary legacy of Theodor Wessel and Emil Vett, founders of the iconic department store Magasin du Nord. Sustainability Collaboration: British Fashion Council Adopts Copenhagen Fashion Week's Sustainability Requirements

Copenhagen Fashion Week's Sustainability Requirements has been leading the fashion industry since its inception in 2020, and its introduction of a minimum set of standards that all CPHFW show & presentation schedule brands have had to conform to was adopted in January 2023.

Now the British Fashion Council and Copenhagen Fashion Week announce a new collaboration, joining forces to align their efforts to accelerate the industry's sustainability actions across the Nordic and British fashion markets.

As part of the collaboration, the BFC will roll out the Sustainability Requirements framework developed by CPHFW. This will kick off with the BFC NEWGEN initiative in 2025, where the Minimum Standards will be embedded into the existing mandatory criteria for admission. Following an onboarding and piloting period, the full implementation will come into effect fully by January 2026.

BFC NEWGEN is the world leading designer programme which supports the best emerging fashion design talent and represents key voices in the British fashion industry. Applications are now open for highly creative designer fashion businesses that has been actively trading for less than 3 years.

Caroline Rush, Chief Executive, British Fashion Council said: "We are thrilled to align with the Copenhagen Fashion Week Sustainability Requirements across BFC NEWGEN, this builds on our existing Minimum Standards and reaffirms our commitment to driving positive change across the global fashion industry. This partnership is a significant step in ensuring that sustainability becomes integral to the future of fashion. Together, we are creating a framework that empowers emerging designer fashion businesses to lead the way and contribute tangibly to a more sustainable and responsible industry."

Cecilie Thorsmark, CEO of Copenhagen Fashion Week said:  "We are delighted to join forces with the British Fashion Council to further expand the reach of our Sustainability Requirements. This partnership not only fosters much-needed industry alignment but also underscores the unique potential of fashion weeks and councils to drive positive change within the industry. With the British Fashion Council, as an influential player in the global fashion landscape, we see a lot of potential to further amplify the impact of our collective commitment to sustainability."

This partnership is a key part of the BFC's ongoing work through its Institute of Positive Fashion (IPF). The IPF was launched as a think tank to address the fashion industry's environmental impact and aims to guide the industry toward sustainable practices, promoting climate action while serving as a platform for research, collaboration and education to accelerate positive change. 2025 marks five years of the IPF and this collaboration with CPHFW underscores the BFC's continued commitment to drive a more sustainable future.

About the Sustainability Requirements

The Sustainability Requirements were introduced by Copenhagen Fashion Week in close collaboration with their Knowledge Partners In Futurum and Dansk Fashion & Textile in January 2020. Since then, they have been updated during 2024 to reflect industry developments as well as changes in the EU policy landscape. The framework represents an essential part of CPHFW's sustainability strategy to drive comprehensive change in the fashion industry and was reviewed by their Advisory Board and an international panel of experts.

Since its launch, the Norwegian Fashion Hub, Oslo Runway and Berlin Fashion Week executed by Fashion Council Germany have embarked on the implementation of the Sustainability Requirements framework.

Meanwhile Copenhagen Fashion Week recently announced it had won the PETA Fashion Awards 2024, having gone fur-free. CFW has also removed wild-animal skins and feathers from the runways, reflecting its commitment to more ethical practices.

Copenhagen Fashion Week has announced the show and presentation schedule for the Autumn/Winter 25 edition, taking place from 27-31 January 2025.

Fashion Trade Fairs: MARIMEKKO showcases AW24 collection at Copenhagen Fashion Week, previewing its first denim range

While the recently launched UNIQLO X Marimekko New Year 2024 limited edition collection featuring the Finnish lifestyle brand's distinctive prints has been selling fast in UNIQLO stores, Marimekko showcased its Autumn/Winter 24 Ready-to-Wear collection during Copenhagen Fashion Week on February 1st 2024, at the National Gallery of Denmark.

Marimekko AW 2024's presentation at CFW marked the grand finale of the brand's 60th anniversary year of its most recognised floral print - Unikko, exploring the relationship between this celebrated pattern with monolithic architecture and materials that are often associated with a more utilitarian mood.

The collection highlights timeless silhouettes for everyday wear, featuring bold patterns, soft cashmere highlighted with architectural 3D applique detailing and shiny metallics.

Colours range from brown and burgundy to cement greys, blush, soft pink, and accents of crispy yellow.

Marimekko also utilised the occasion to reveal a new product category - Marimekko Maridenim – the brand’s first-ever denim collection which will be launched in August 2024.  The range of premium denim jeans comes in three fits: straight, wide, and barrel leg, and includes two full ensembles with the Unikko print.

According to the brand, which strives "to lead by example and move, step by step, the entire industry toward a more sustainable future," Marimekko Maridenim was designed by following The Jeans Redesign guidelines by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, based on the principles of a circular economy. The Jeans Redesign guidelines were developed with input from 80 experts across the industry, academia, and NGOs to encourage leading brands, mills, and manufacturers to transform the way jeans are designed and made so that they are worn more frequently, can be remade, and crafted from safe and recycled or renewable inputs.

The monomaterial cotton used (in 80% organic cotton and 20% recycled cotton) does not have any stretch, is free from stone washing or use of Potassium permanganate, and there is minimal use of  non-electroplated hardware, featuring removable buttons and no rivets.

Fashion Trade Fairs: Classic and contemporary designer styles continue at Copenhagen Fashion Week

It's Day Four and the final show day of Copenhagen Fashion Week AW24.

Opening the day is the Ukrainian brand TG Botanical and at the end of the day ROTATE will be closing the Copenhagen Fashion Week AW24 official schedule.

Once again the CPHFW NEWTALENT showroom supported by CIRCULOSE® is open for industry appointments and the official talk programme with Vogue Business continues with two talks on the schedule: "Innovations in the supply chain" at the dedicated CFW Talk venue in the Polestar Space and "The power and purpose of the next generation" at the GANNI exhibition venue at Nikolaj Kunsthal.

The evening will close with a special dinner co-hosted by CFW, Hypebeast and Hypebae spotlighting the creative Nordic industries.

On the third day of shows on January 31, CFW celebrated its partnership with Ukrainian Fashion Week with a presentation from the brands Chereshnivska, Domanof, J'amemme, Paskal, and Vozianov.

The day's runway presentations began with Opéra Sport.

OpéraSport strives to bridge the Parisian way of integrating classic and contemporary styles with the sporty edge of Copenhagen, thus ensuring relevance and timelessness throughout.

It was an elegant yet sporty, luxurious yet affordable, sustainable yet sexy collecgtion.  A responsible mindset reflects the production to only cover recycled or organic fabrics and a production volume that continuously reflects the demand; to create and produce responsible and relevant clothing without compromising design and aesthetics, according to the brand.

Closing the third day was a presentation by Danish fashion house Baum und Pferdgarten, founded in Copenhagen in 1999.  The brand name is an interplay between the surnames of the founding Creative Directors, Rikke Baumgarten and Helle Hestehave.

Their timeless and design-led collections are full of unexpected playful contrasts.

Canadian designer Paolina Russo who has a BA degree from Central St Martin's in London, also presented her AW24 collection.

The London-based label won the first Zalando Visionary Award in partnership with Copenhagen Fashion Week (CFW) in 2023.

Fashion Trade Fair: Vain FW24 collection at Copenhagen Fashion Week is a Love Story

The VAIN FW24 collection, which was presented in a runway show at Copenhagen Fashion Week on January 30th 2024, reflects on the intricate dance of work and passion, leisure, and daily life, embodying a love story between life and work.

The collection is heavily inspired by the journey of the brand, says the Creative Director Jimi Vain. "We’ve been all around but it's our time to return to the fundamentals, and VAIN is all about love. It has consistently been, and it always will be. It encompasses the affection we share for one another, for this journey, for our planet, for our craft, and for the community around us".

Vain explained that in the fashion industry, due to busy schedules and numerous challenges, it is often difficult to find a balance between work and leisure. It’s a conflict of interest that we (have to) grapple with daily. Hard work fueled by pure passion is a beautiful thing. There is a certain level of absurdity to it all, especially in the fashion industry. The paradox and irony of months of intensive work culminating in a brief 15-minute runway show, only to swiftly transition to the next endeavor — the relentless rat race of fashion.

“We have now been in the industry for almost 3 years, gradually getting into the rhythm of fashion. In this time, we have created our own version of the infamous rat race. Luckily we live and work from Helsinki which is not a typical fashion capital. It’s a city with a calmer phase where creativity can bloom freely. We also love the idea that we are kind of outsiders. I believe it gives us a more objective perspective on the industry.

"With work life as the broader theme, more concrete inspirations are specifically Helsinki as an environment, Japanese work culture and attire, as well as the 2010 Atlanta trap music era, where rappers used to put out 3-4 mixtapes a year, glamourizing work ethic in a way that still resonates with us."

Married to the VAIN showcases silhouettes and accessories that blend elements of formal business attire with the comfort of leisurewear, presenting a fusion of sleek, tailored designs and relaxed streetwear. The garments are rich in symbolism and graphics that reflect the so-called rat race. To solidify the commitment to this life, the collection also includes a wedding ring. The predominant colour scheme as typical for VAIN is black, accented by glittery and bright elements that pay homage to contemporary trap music aesthetics.

The collection features items from the upcoming “VAIN Upcycled” product line and incorporates a wide range of deadstock materials.

To incorporate a soundscape that feels like Helsinki, VAIN commissioned a collection EP, titled "From HEL With Love" from VAIN´s friends at record label and creative collective BELOW0. The runway music is an extended mix of the 3-song-EP, releasing on all streaming platforms on February 2nd, 2024.
