Mary Katrantzou's Fantastical Florals for The Rug Company

A new collection of seven rug designs from The Rug Company show off fantastical magnified florals as well as elegant motifs of sunray shades, organic shapes and contemporary graphics. The rugs are by London-based fashion designer Mary Katrantzou and have all the hallmarks of the bold and imaginative patterns of her eponymous brand.

Mary Katrantzou's rugs for The Rug Company were launched at Decorex in London, held at Kensington Olympia in October 2019.  Left design above is Bluebell Daydream featuring amplified florals in a spectrum of blues and purples; and right is Botanical Paradise featuring a hyper-real floral scene of blown-up flowers combined with a palette of deep and powder pinks and amaranth.
The rugs shown above and below have been finely knotted
by expert craftsmen in Tibetan wool and silk.

The rugs, inspired by Katrantzou's past collections and reimagined for this collaborative collection with The Rug Company, represent the designer's first foray into the world of interiors.  It is a natural progression for Katrantzou as she is the daughter of an interior designer mother and a textile engineer father so she was exposed to the world of interiors from a very early age.
Design left is Sunray Pink depicting a dramatic sun motif with metallic rays radiating from the centre;
and right is Garden of Eden with dramatic soft blue and white flowers.

Commenting on the new rug collection, Katrantzou says:  "We are an image-led brand and print is so transferable across different disciplines.  I chose to collaborate with The Rug Company as there was an authentic synergy between the two brands - a genuine appreciation for craftsmanship and a passion for bold patterns and unique beauty, values which we share at Mary Katrantzou."

A graduate in textile design at Central Saint Martins specialising in interiors, she followed her bachelor's degree with a Masters in fashion.  Having attained wide acclaim in the world of fashion and acquired an established following for her artistic digital prints and feminine silhouettes over the past 10 years, Katrantzou's work has been featured in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, The Copper Hewitt Smithsonian Museum, The Barbican and many others.

The rugs were showcased at Decorex trade fair held 6 - 9 October 2019 at Olympia in Kensington, London and also available for viewing in The Rug Company showrooms.

The Rug Company has a long tradition of collaborating with world renowned designers.

After 50 years, TexSelect (previously known as TexPrint) has announced that this year is its final competition having been providing valuable support nurturing, mentoring and guiding British-trained textile and design talents due to funding challenges and the retirement of long-standing management executives.

Now industry professionals can feel a sense of relieve with the announcement that the Paris-based Premiere Vision Group, organiser of the world's leading sourcing events for fashion professionals, will continue its support for emerging textile designers through an agreement with TexSelect that will build on the talent search programme's legacy with an international perspective from 2020.

The P.V. Group will take over as champion of new graduate talent when TexSelect completes its voluntary winding up at the end of the year.  Further announcements will be made about the future structure of the talent selection scheme under Premiere Vision's auspices during the September 2019 edition at Premiere Vision Paris in Parc des Expositions.  The two organisations have run in parallel for nearly 50 years, share a common objective of supporting creativity in textile design.

"Both Premiere Vision and TexSelect view knit, print, weave and mixed media innovators as being a vital, creative force in the advancement of textile and apparel design, "says Gilles Lasbordes,  (at left) managing director of Premiere Vision Group.  "Premiere Vision is committed to giving new designers space and support between university and the launch of their professional practice."

Barbara Kennington, TexSelect's honorary chairman (at right) explains:" Over recent years, we have had a tough time raising the funds required to run the scheme.  At the same time, many of our loyal management team are retiring."

"As a major sponsor and host of the TexSelect design village, we spoke with our colleagues at Premiere Vision about our intention to windup the charity at the end of 2019.  We are delighted that Premiere Vision has been so forthcoming and will create new opportunities for young designers when TexSelect in its current form closes."

Premiere Vision Group is the global leader in upstream, creative fashion trade shows.  From 15 Lyon-based weavers in the early 1970s to more than 2,000 exhibitors at PV Paris today, the group's strategy has remained to support the development of the international fashion industry and major market evolutions through its services and 12 events per year, to which has been added a unique online sourcing tool:  Premiere Vision Marketplace, managed by the company's subsidiary, Premiere Vision Digital.

Première Vision Paris February 2017 event.
Focusing on Spring/Summer 2019 collections and trends, two of the key areas of the February 2018 session are being given a face-lift, featuring a new stand design created by French designer Ora  Ïto  who presents an exclusive stand and furniture concept, putting a special emphasis on highlighting the creativity of exhibitors at two sectors: Première Vision Fabrics and Première Vision Yarns, offering new lighting and novel additions, such as video screens built into the stand walls.

“I worked to create a virtuous and homogeneous microcosm, a fresh, reinvented showcase where each element is eco-friendly and thought-out all along the manufacturing process,” explains Ora Ïto.
This creation brings together all in one place the strong values of Première Vision:  aesthetic research, access to new technologies and environmental awareness.

The show’s new look and layout is also accompanied by changes in the organization of the fashion information areas and forums, which are indispensable tools for brands and buyers looking for inspiration and exhibitors’ latest products.

There are also two market focus areas:   TECH FOCUS dedicated to the sports, performance and functional-wear sector, and JEWEL FOCUS to present a selection of components for the fashion jewellery market.

Ultra Violet is the PANTONE Colour of the Year 2018

Global colour authority PANTONE has announced that their Colour of the Year for 2018 is Ultra Violet, described as one of the most magical and decadent colours due to its "distinctive and complex purple shade that fascinates and intrigues” while conveying originality and ingenuity,
Nuanced and full of emotion, the depth of PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet "symbolizes experimentation and non-conformity, spurring individuals to imagine their unique mark on the world, and push boundaries through creative outlets."
“We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level,” said Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute.
“From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.” Complex and contemplative, Ultra Violet suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now, said Eisemann, adding that the vast and limitless night sky is symbolic of what is possible and continues to inspire the desire to pursue a world beyond our own.
"The Colour of the Year is one moment in time that provides strategic direction for the world of trend and design, reflecting the Pantone Color Institute’s year-round work doing the same for designers and brands.”

Mylands Paint made-to-order and available only on the Mylands website and through their factory shop.
“As individuals around the world become more fascinated with colour and realize its ability to convey deep messages and meanings, designers and brands should feel empowered to use colour to inspire and influence. ”
Enigmatic purples have also long been symbolic of counterculture, unconventionality, and artistic brilliance. Musical icons Prince, David Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix brought shades of Ultra Violet to the forefront of western pop culture as personal expressions of individuality.

“The Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today,” added Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute. “As individuals around the world become more fascinated with colour and realize its ability to convey deep messages and meanings, designers and brands should feel empowered to use colour to inspire and influence. ”

Pantone, a wholly owned subsidiary of X-Rite, Incorporated, is provider of professional colour language standards and digital solutions.

The British fashion industry is a force to be reckoned with, because it contributes £28 billion to the UK economy and provides employment for some 880,000 people.  The recently concluded London Fashion Week also highlighted that the UK is where design talents are trained and nurtured, and the UK design graduates' skills are among the most sought-after in the global fashion industry.

Thus every year when the London-based 30-year-old charity TEXPRINT take their annual brood of design finalists to Paris to take part in the September edition of the Premiere Vision Designs show (formerly Indigo, and an integral part of Premiere Vision Paris), the global fashion, textile and interiors industries not only take notice but flock to their exhibition booths to "shop" for new designs and possibly look for potential new talent to recruit.

This year, as in previous Septembers, much excitement of the three-day show in Paris (September 13–15) was centred on the second day of the fair when the 2016 award prize winners from the 24 finalists were announced, and honoured in a presentation ceremony.

This time the prizes were presented by  Martin Leuthold, Artistic Director of Swiss company Jakob Schlaepfer, renowned for its innovative textiles for both the fashion and interiors worlds, and the name behind many of the sumptuous textiles that grace glamorous showcases ranging from the couture catwalks of Paris to the red carpets of the Oscars. In her introduction at the ceremony, Joanna Bowring Sponsorship Diretor of Texprint said fashion houses love working with the Swiss company because of its ultra-creative ‘blue sky’ approach – everything is possible in the world of Jakob Schlaepfer.  Leuthold also added later that this was his 80th PV that he had attended, since 1976.  He had previous won the PV Imagination Prize in 2009, and also the Grand Prix Design at the Swiss Federal Design Awards in 2013.

Commenting on the 24 finalists in th 2016 competition, Texprint Creative Director Peter Ring-Lefevre said the designers are individually very different, and he loved that there are very traditional hand-drawn skills applied to fashion and interior.  "It’s very heartening to see because these are skills we don’t want to lose,”

With support from Texprint’s experienced team and industry patrons and matrons on how to market and sell their work, the 24 designers reported commercial success during the Premiere Vision Designs fair in Paris held 13 - 15 September, with many of them selling their designs and even original work to industry leaders and international fashion brands.  Mixed media design winner Grace Lomas, who won the Texprint Fashion Award, told organisers that she was thrilled by the quality of the companies she was meeting. “One moment it’s Marc Jacobs, the next it’s Nike. People are so curious to see our work. They say this is the best area of PV. Maybe it’s because we are working without the constraints of the more established companies.”

Following PV Paris, two of the Texprint designers – Amy Smith and Jacob Monk – will be joining the major Asian show, Intertextile Shanghai (October 11–13).
Seven of the designers are also preparing for extended internships in Como this autumn, where Texprint has long-running connections with the finest Italian mills.
