Copenhagen Fashion Week: Marimekko Showcases Bold Expression of Pattern and Heritage

Finnish fashion and lifestyle brand Marimekko unveiled its Spring/Summer 2026 collection in a  runway show that merged bold pattern expression with industrial performance art on August 7 at Copenhagen Fashion Week.

Staged in a former industrial site along Copenhagen’s harbour, the venue’s raw, utilitarian backdrop created a dynamic contrast to the vibrant, energetic summer collection. Known for its iconic prints and colours, Marimekko explored playful proportions and carefully balanced compositions in what the brand called a “performative expression of pattern.”

 

The SS26 collection draws deeply from the art of printmaking, with overlapping lines and layered textures forming ever-changing, human-made motifs. This visual rhythm was accompanied by a specially produced industrial soundscape, created from recordings at Marimekko’s textile printing factory in Helsinki and mixed by Finnish musician and artist YSI. The result was a multisensory experience that blurred the boundaries between fashion, art, and performance.

Creative Director Rebekka Bay described the collection as a transformation of familiar ideas into new, unexpected forms. 

“We re-formulate some of Marimekko’s most perennial styles and silhouettes and turn known ideas into something entirely new,” said Bay. “This is seen in a new version of the iconic Marimini dress from the 1960s — now reimagined as a playful summer co-ord set.”

The collection featured a vivid palette of pinks, greens, and summer blues — from peony and cherry blossom to hydrangea and spirulina — punctuated by accents of pistachio, peach, and zesty lemon. The garments created poetic interplay between femininity and pragmatism, mini and maxi, soft layering and utilitarian edge. Every look was paired with contrasting adidas Tokyo footwear, emphasizing the collection’s theme of unexpected harmony.

Central to the showcase was a celebration of the 70th anniversary of Marimekko’s most enduring design icon: the Jokapoika shirt, originally designed by Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi in 1956. Known for its genderless silhouette, distinctive silver buttons, and bold Piccolo stripe, the shirt was reintroduced with modern interpretations. Variations included cropped silhouettes, enlarged prints, multicolored designs, and utilitarian dresses — all while paying homage to the hand-painted origins of the Piccolo pattern, where overlapping brushstrokes create a unique third hue.

Founded in 1951, Marimekko remains globally recognized for its original prints and vibrant use of colour across fashion and home décor. With around 150 stores worldwide and an online presence in 35 countries, the brand continues to build on its legacy of artistic integrity and design innovation.

The SS26 show reaffirmed Marimekko’s place at the intersection of craft, culture, and contemporary style — celebrating its heritage while boldly pushing the boundaries of pattern and proportion.

Interior designer Tara Rodrigues, founder of TR Interiors and winner of Channel 4’s £250,000 Big Interiors Battle, said: “A revival of peach is long overdue. Peach was once commonly used in interiors but as modernism spread, it lost its place in the contemporary home.

New Abstract Letterpress Textured Block Prints In Neutral Tones

The minimal prints in peach, beige and charcoal tones with echoes of architectural features are a perfect fit for contemporary interiors. Created using traditional letterpress techniques, the textured woodgrain finish is achieved by inking and printing different shaped wooden blocks. 

The prints are now available at Of Cabbages and Kings, a shop, gallery and creative space in Stoke Newington, North East London. "For this production we’ve worked closely with a well-known Swedish stylist to really create the right feeling and look in each frame. It was a truly magical couple of days," says Annica Wallin.

This collection of 26 photo art prints are centred around a rich colour palette featuring deep purple, anthracite grey and gold. "We wanted to tell a story of breathtaking rooms and modern luxury in a rich colour palette perfect for autumn and winter. A costume drama set in the present day," says Annica Wallin.  

 FOUR WAYS TO ARRANGE A GALLERY WALL

If you like keeping things clean and organised, the Grid style of a gallery wall shown above allows you to mix and match many different art posters and photo prints while still achieving a clean look. If you want to keep your wall art streamlined, stick to two or three colours when choosing the art prints, all of the same size. Or maybe just go for black-and-white prints all the way.

Undoubtedly one of the biggest interior trends of the season, making a statement with a larger-than-life art print can really transform a room. Whether you choose to go for something colourful or minimalistic, scaling up to a 100x150 cm frame is a good idea if you like this look. A perfect piece to hang above a sofa or on a large empty wall.

For an eclectic effect, why not mixing frames in different sizes and materials. Try playing around with the spacing as well for a truly personal look, or complementing your wall art with a mirror, a hat or maybe framing a piece of fabric to switch things up!

And finally consider making use of a picture ledge for displaying your wall art to create a clean look.

MARBLE mural wallpaper and prints by Nat Maks

The traditional Japanese Art of Suminagashi meaning "floating ink" involves colours being placed on a water surface, which then begin to expand on the water. They are only encouraged to move by air, nothing else disturbs the surface.
Now German-born designer and illustrator Natascha Maksimovic who set up Nat Maks based in the UK in the seaside town of Margate in Kent, is a master of Suminagashi a marbling technique.  As the colours move in an organic way, Natascha makes a print by placing and moving the paper on the water when a dynamic pattern has been formed.

The MARBLE mural shown above is hand-printed by way of the traditional Japanese Art of Suminagashi. Natascha loves the medium of wallpapers and wanted to take the Art of marbling to a much bigger scale. Each roll is unique. Instead of designing patterns Natascha creates individual rolls of 'paintings' which are in theory a one-off wallpaper print. Each roll is signed by the artist.

Every mural is made by Natascha, prepared and completed by hand, and freely reflect the artist's energy within its pattern, while the colours react differently every time, sometimes getting on in harmony, sometimes fighting for dominance.

Landscapes of South Downs National Park

If you’re looking for inspirational images to offer you calming joy during these crazy times, Tom Shaw’s latest works may be the answer.

Award-winning British photographer Tom Shaw is known for his large format images of coastal scenes and mountain landscapes.  During the lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Shaw has made use of his government-mandated daily exercise over the last few weeks by exploring the sparse, rolling hills of his local landscape – on the edge of the South Downs National Park near his hometown Lewes (and my hometown of Eastbourne), and taken a series of photographs to showcase the beautiful landscape at dawn and dusk.
The 22 landscape photographs in prints are now launched by Another Country* in sizes of 600x800mm or 750x1000mm.  They can be enjoyed online or you may wish to acquire and hang one of them in your home.

Tropical theme featuring birds brings vibrant colour into our homes

Now talented artist and illustrator Emma Wren from Suffolk, UK, has just launched a new collection of original prints of vibrant colours that also features the tropical theme with birds.

Originally painted in rich watercolours, inks and gouche her Giclee prints capture every brushmark and texture of the original painting. Available as framed prints or mounted on boards ready to hang.

Upon leaving Winchester school of art, she worked with a number of prestigious companies designing home textiles. Clients have included Prestigious, Graham and Brown and SMD Textiles. Alongside her textile career, Emma is also a Magazine designer and has freelanced for many magazine titles including Living etc, Ideal home, Homes and Gardens, Country Living, Good Housekeeping and House Beautiful.

After taking time off to raise a family, she returned to her love for drawing and painting, concentrating in her love of texture and colour.

Emma now primarily works in soft watercolours and rich oil paints, often manipulating and experimenting with her images in CAD to create new and exciting designs alongside her paintings.

March 8th - International Women's Day!
