Renewable sustainable cellulosic fibre launched for the growing women’s casual wear and loungewear market

This year’s Oscar award ceremony, delayed due to Covid-19 restrictions and held chiefly at Union Station in Los Angeles may have been very different from what we used to see but the event may have given us a glimpse of what it would be like if we were to dress up again.

But in the meantime, casual clothes are the order of the day, as many consumers are in demand for comfortable, sustainable clothing that make more sense today during these challenging times when we are working from home most of the time.

Now US company Eastman has launched its Naia™ Renew cellulosic staple fibre as a timely answer for the growing women’s casual wear and loungewear market.  

Sourced from 60% wood pulp and 40%  recycled  waste plastics,* it can be produced at scale to deliver sustainability without compromise to the fashion world.

Naia™ Renew  staple  fiber  has inherent  softness,  is  quick  drying  and reduces garment pilling, according to Carolina Sister  Cohn,  Eastman’s  global  segment  market  manager  for  fashion.  She also said their fibre blends well with other eco-friendly materials such as lyocell, modal and recycled polyester to produce sustainable fabrics and garments that are ideal for everyday comfort wear—whether it’s a busy day on the go or a cozy night on the couch. It is a versatile fibre perfect for T-shirts, comfy pants, jumpsuits and dresses.

Fully  circular,  Naia™  Renew  staple  fibre  is  produced  with  a  low  carbon  footprint  in  a closed-loop process where solvents are safely recycled back into the system for reuse. 




The fibre is produced from wood pulp sourced from certified forests, and the recycled plastics  feedstock  is  generated  via  Eastman's  patented  carbon  renewal  technology (CRT), a  integrated  molecular  recycling  technology  that  breaks  down  waste plastics, such as post-consumer carpet fibre and plastic packaging materials, into basic molecular building blocks for the manufacture of new products including fibers — a truly circular solution creating value from waste.

Eastman Naia™ cellulosic staple fiber debuts at Première Vision Paris

Makers of sustainable fibres and producers of materials of eco credentials are launching their new products this week during the Premiere Vision Paris, the international fashion and textile exposition, Feb. 11-13 to entice the global industry that is determined to make sustainability a major focus.

US company Eastman, the maker of sustainably sourced Naia™ cellulosic filament yarn, announces the expansion of its Naia™ fiber portfolio at PV Paris this week where it has a booth as well as a stand in the Smart Creation area.

Eastman’s global marketing director of textiles Ruth Farrell said, with the introduction of its new cellulosic staple fiber, Naia™ offers another versatile eco-conscious material choice for sustainable fashion.

“We have been working with a strong network of innovative spinner partners around the world to introduce our new Naia™ cellulosic staple fiber.  Working with our value chain partners, we’re facilitating quick and easy access to Naia™ fibers for our mills, and ultimately brands, regardless of their location.”

Naia™ staple fiber has inherent softness, is quick drying and reduces pilling. It blends well with other eco-friendly materials, such as Lyocell, Modal and recycled polyester—to produce sustainable fabrics and garments that are ideal for everyday wear.

Eastman will be working with several best-in-class spinners worldwide to create Naia™ staple fiber, including Karacasu Tekstil in Turkey, Shandong Long Run Textile and Dezhou Huayuan Eco-Technology on Mainland China, Pratibha Syntex and RSWM Ltd. in India and Linz Textil in Austria. These industry-leading spinners blend Naia™ staple fiber with other sustainable fibers to meet the needs of manufacturers across the globe.

Naia™ is responsibly sourced from sustainably managed pine and eucalyptus forests and plantations. Eastman has aligned its entire forestry supply chain with Forest Stewardship Council® sourcing standards, including controlled wood procedures. Eastman and its wood pulp suppliers hold FSC®  (C140711) and/or PEFC™ Chain of Custody certifications. Furthermore, Eastman has partnered with Canopy to demonstrate its ongoing commitment to sustainable forestry management. The recently released 2019 Hot Button Ranking and Report shows Eastman’s commitment to sustainable forestry management, as the company has been reported to have zero risk of sourcing from ancient and endangered forests.

Sustainable bio-based Naia™ textile products showcased at Premiere Vision Paris in September

Sustainability and smart technology today go hand in hand when it comes to textile and clothing developments that are created to be kind to our environment, and this is one of the main highlights at Premiere Vision Paris held in September 2019, in the Smart Creation, a dedicated space at the international textile and materials trade fair, eco-friendly creations from a wide range of brands and producers promoted their new developments from yarns to finished products made by combining values combining creativity, innovation and sustainability.

One of the companies featured in this segment, and which also took up its own stand was Eastman, the maker of bio-based Naia™ cellulosic yarn made from sustainably sourced wood pulp.
Launched at PV 2018, Naia™ was celebrating one year of continuous innovation with new partnerships, products and sustainability certifications, offering a viable eco-conscious choice of materials for sustainable fashion in alignment with the industry’s shift toward the circular economy.

Naia brought a wide range of new eco-friendly developments to the Premiere Vision Paris show in September 2019 which showed inherent softness and lustre while being demonstrating versatility and easy-care.  
Highlights included Eastman Naia™ bamboo blend from Burmod in Turkey, wrinkle-resistant textured glossy knit from Textivision in Mexico (shown in picture above), shimmering satin woven silk blend with jacquard structure from Manifatture Bianchi in Italy (as shown in picture below), and an open mesh warp knit with a metallic appearance and deceptively soft hand from Bella Fabrics in the USA.  
The fabrics combines the richness of nature with comfort, said Ms Farrell, making them ideal for womenswear, intimate apparel and linings.


Naia™ cellulosic yarn is made with sustainably sourced wood and offers full traceability from tree to yarn's. 


According to Eastman, in developing the yarn, the company considers the entire lifecycle, from responsible sourcing to end-of-life disposal. FSC® Mix certified Naia™ cellulosic yarn is Eastman’s latest product advance in the sustainable fibers category. Eastman has aligned its entire forestry supply chain with Forest Stewardship Council® sourcing standards, including controlled wood procedures. Naia™ is also certified as biodegradable in fresh water and soil environments and is compostable in industrial settings, having received the OK Biodegradable and OK Compost conformity marks from TÜV AUSTRIA.
Made by Eastman in the USA in accordance with the highest safety, social and environmental standards, Naia™ is responsibly sourced from sustainably managed pine and eucalyptus plantations, ensuring no deforestation. Eastman holds FSC® and PEFC™ Chain of Custody certification, and all wood pulp suppliers have FSC® and/or PEFC™ Chain of Custody as well. Naia™ cellulosic yarn is produced in a safe, closed-loop process where solvents are recycled back into the system for reuse. Naia™ has an optimized, low-impact manufacturing process with a low tree-to-yarn carbon and water footprint.
